Ellen Ryan, Co-founder, Docuvela
Welcome to Docuvela, where we are on a mission to revolutionize content services. This commitment has been nurtured and expanded by working in the ECM industry for over a quarter of a century and builds on several passions that have guided our journey:
- A zeal for demystifying technology, making it simple, accessible, and user-friendly
- An unwavering commitment to developing software that echoes the voice of our customers, ensuring their needs and experiences are at the forefront of our innovations
- A desire to provide cost-effective solutions, reflecting our understanding of the economic landscapes our clients navigate
- A deep-seated belief in becoming a trusted advisor, building lasting relationships based on integrity and expertise
- And a constant drive to harness the value of modern cloud technology.
These core passions have shaped our company’s ethos and continue to drive our pursuit of excellence in delivering unparalleled content services solutions and consulting.
The Stagnant ECM Industry
The stagnation in content services over the past two decades starkly contrasts the widespread advancements in other technology areas. Current content services vendors have kept their architecture the same for over 20 years. Since Gartner declared the “Death of ECM” in 2017, very little has changed.
Monolithic applications are not architected to fully take advantage of modern cloud technologies to scale or provide architectural simplification and a reduction in total cost of ownership. While technology has moved forward, the content services industry has been stagnant. We have personally worked with companies that have been told by vendors that it will take years to migrate their content into an ECM system or that running their applications in a vendor-hosted cloud environment will cost close to a million dollars per year.
This stagnancy, coupled with the prohibitive costs and complexities of migrating to traditional ECM systems, underscores the urgent need for change—a change that Docuvela is spearheading.
Introducing Veladocs
At the forefront of this transformation is Veladocs, our cloud-native innovation designed to leverage the full potential of cloud technology. With its modern, cloud-based architecture, Veladocs promises scalability, reduced ownership costs, and a modern, intuitive user experience. It’s a testament to our commitment to redefining content services for efficiency and simplicity.
Initially, Veladocs is targeting the following use cases:
- Simple: Ingest, Store, Retrieve – Every organization has multiple use cases that only require a secure import, store, and retrieval scenario – records archival, customer statements, and claims content, to name a few. These may be sets of content sitting in an existing ECM application that must be more utilized and affordable. Veladocs’ architecture and front end are well-suited for these scenarios due to its simplified approach, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Better Search for S3/File Shares/EFSS – Content stored in S3, file shares, and Electronic File Sync and Share (EFSS) tools such as Box can only be located by drilling through a folder structure, unless you are the rare company that uses Box tags. This setup makes the content very difficult to locate. Veladocs provides a better search experience, including searching by content metadata, full-text searching, and other advanced methods such as natural language searching.
- View-Only Content Portals – These portals typically run in conjunction with a full-featured ECM application but cache content outside of the ECM repository for simplified viewing to a broader audience. The Veladocs offering supports event-driven synchronization with the primary ECM solution and provides access to released content through a modern, streamlined interface.
The initial Veladocs release, planned for Q2 2024, will run in the AWS cloud and support secure content import, storage, retrieval, and metadata. Content will be accessible through a modern, configurable, responsive web interface or through APIs, including standard AWS APIs, greatly simplifying integrations and supporting headless content repositories. Future releases will add functionality and additional cloud vendors, such as Azure. Staying true to our passions, we will let our customers prioritize our product journey.
Our Team: The Heart of Innovation
Our journey began when George Steimer and I came together over our shared passion for simplifying ECM/content services technology and delivering unparalleled customer service, an industry we have poured our heart and soul into for the past 25+ years. . Our shared dream of creating a platform that seamlessly bridges the gap between complex technology and user-friendly solutions has given birth to Docuvela.
George and I are joined by two exceptional founding engineers, Marc Brouillette and Dan Grumieaux. Their profound expertise in content services, modern development platforms, and cloud-based technologies makes them invaluable assets to our team. Their technical prowess, combined with the ease and trust that comes from decades of working together at Technology Services Group with George and me, has significantly contributed to the seamless integration and ability to quickly develop the Veladocs product.
But that’s not all. The Docuvela team is leveraging the vast industry knowledge and experience of two industry stalwarts, Dave Jones and Dave Giordano. Known for their visionary insights and unparalleled understanding of the content services landscape, the Daves, as we fondly call them, have been instrumental in guiding our strategic direction. Their thought leadership and deep-rooted industry knowledge have been pivotal in shaping our offerings to meet and exceed the evolving needs of our customers.
At Docuvela, we are a team united by a shared passion and a common vision. Our company culture builds on a foundation of collaboration, innovation, and excellence. We believe in fostering an environment where creativity thrives.
Looking Ahead
The excitement within our team for Veladocs is palpable. The cloud platform’s agility in incorporating new functionalities speaks volumes about future possibilities. Functionalities such as text extraction and automatic classification can be achieved by linking them into AWS Textract and AWS Comprehend. The ability to expose content to AI engines such as Claude-3 via AWS Bedrock can quickly be done since all content and data will be accessible through AWS APIs. Cloud monitoring alarms can alert operational teams of problems before end users even notice an issue with the system. Content and metadata can be accessed directly through cloud APIs, greatly simplifying integrations with line of business applications AI tools and other modern technologies. We are excited about where our customer-driven product enhancements and insightful customers will take us and how quickly we can add functionality since the back and front end are architected with the latest technologies.
Thanks to the cloud’s power and our forward-thinking architecture, we’re eager to amaze our customers with the rapid evolution of our offerings.
We invite you to follow us on social media, as many upcoming announcements will surround our official product release in Q2. Please contact us if you have additional questions or want to see a preview of the release.
Docuvela will host a launch webinar on May 2nd to showcase Veladocs and demonstrate its capabilities. The event will illustrate why organizations need a new model for their document management strategy and how a more efficient, agile, and cost-effective approach to managing digital documents can pay dividends.
