AI has dominated IT and business strategy discussions throughout 2023. This is largely due to the widespread release of ChatGPT 3 in November 2022. Like almost any new technology, individuals experienced first hand the power of these engines and then brought those expectations to their workplace.  

It is easy to group all AI together, but there are really many different types of AI, all at different points of maturity. Generative AI and their integral Foundation Models are at the peak of Gartner’s 2023 AI Hype Cycle, a point of highly inflated expectations. During this phase of the hype cycle the enthusiasm and expectations often exceed the reality of the technology’s current capabilities. 

We will be blogging in the upcoming weeks around Generative AI and Foundational Models specifically as they relate to Enterprise Content Management and Content Services. To make sure we are all starting with a common understanding of the key terms, below are the basics.

• Generative AI technology accepts inputs and creates new text, images, audio, code or other generated output. 
• Foundational Models are “the brains” of these Generative AI solutions. Foundational Models are pre-trained on vast amounts of data, and are designed to produce a wide variety of outputs. 
• Large Language Models (LLMs) are the most common type of foundational model accepting natural language inputs, understanding and interpreting the text and generating original content in a human-like fashion.

So will Generative AI and LLMs revolutionize content management? Can searching be made smarter? Will metadata and full-text searching be a thing of the past? Can AI be reliably used for document and image generation? Can AI predict trends and make people more efficient? What are the trade offs? And most importantly: can AI be implemented without requiring millions of dollars of investment?
